Here at QuickandBig.com we are proud to offer for sale, our beautiful Chesil Speedster. Beautifully built, huge spec and plenty of power, whats not to like? As the values of the original 956’s climb to the stratosphere, there is a huge collectors and enthusiasts market for these Chesil classics.

The original Chesil Speedster was developed just a few short miles from Dorset's famous pebble beach by enthusiast and motor engineer Peter Bailey. His vision was to build the best engineered and faithful 356 Speedster; something he did when open Chesil Motor Company in Dorset in 1991.

The Chesil Speedster Range is inspired by the world renowned German 2-seater sports car. The 356 was made famous by 1950s stars of screen and motor sport. It has become one of the most sought after collectors' cars in the world due to it’s elegant lines and timeless beauty. Chesil created an accurate and perfectly crafted homage, bringing alive a golden era of west coast style based upon readily available Porsche-derived VW parts, and supported by the extensive air-cooled after-market.

WRV337K was first registered on 10/03/72, as such is registered as a “Historic” vehicle, with the benefits of being MOT, road tax and ULEZ exempt. It has had only 1 previous keeper. It has only completed 10,028 miles since its build and is presented in Porsche Polar Silver.

Our lovely Chesil, is accompanied by a huge folder of paper work / receipts, including the original Chesil order, brochures, numerous build receipts etc. The build receipts add up to well over £20,000. And that doesn’t include many hours of skilled labour, plus the big ticket items like, donor car (1972 Volkswagen Beetle) and fabrication, recent high spec 2056cc engine, Porsche gearbox, stereo, interior trimming etc. We have just had the Speedster repainted at prize winning classic car experts, Bushells Restorations, it is stunning!

Our speedster was built between 2005-07, and passed its IVA on 9/7/07 and was correctly registered as Chesil Speedster. It is accompanied by all the paper work associated with its IVA inspection and DVLA registration. As part of the build process the original Volkswagen Beetle’s chassis was shortened, its important this work and the build has been assessed by the DVLA. Vehicles still registered incorrectly as a Volkswagen convertible, may not have had this work done, and its proportions may be wrong, and may be registered incorrectly.

Starting at the front, our Speedster has been fitted with period-correct spot lamps to add to a kind-of “outlaw” look. This is further complimented with a narrowed adjustable front beam, fitted with dropped spindles and front disks to retain excellent ride and stopping. Rolling on 3 piece split-rim Compomotive “Dage” Fuch wheels, we think the stance on this car is the perfect blend of practicality with just a hint of “hotrod”.

The interior of our convertible is beautifully presented with carpet set, dash and low-back, bucket seats trimmed in matching Mulberry biscuit-cushioned leather, a period-correct Mota- Lita wood rimmed, steering wheel and Porsche 356 triple gauges. A hidden Bluetooth amplifier is fitted, but to be honest, we prefer the sweet sound of the heavily tweaked engine. Our classic roadster also comes with full weather gear, which is again presented in lovely condition and easily detachable, allowing easier access to the rear bench seat.

Given the Chesils compact proportions, the interior space is remarkably generous and perfect for taller drivers, who (like me) cant fit in many other classic cars. It also benefits from a rear bench seat, ideal for smaller occupants, as such our Speedster is a 2+2.

A Carter fuel pump is fitted beneath the fuel tank and tidy-looking “Frunk” area, sending fuel to the engine at the rear. The Rear Suspension is Independent Rear Suspension (IRS) utilising late beetle (1302/3) swing arms and adjustable spring plates either side. This enabled the use of a Porsche 902/1 gearbox (from 1966) which has been freshly rebuilt by Bears Motorsports in Birmingham. With 5 speeds, this gives comfortable cruising; but remember, early Porsches had a dog-leg box, meaning first is to the left and backwards, not to be confused with reverse!

To change gears, a Bug@5Speed shifter is fitted giving a precise feel to the gear shifts, and a Kennedy stage 1 clutch gives a reasonable and light pedal feel. The Gearbox is further supported with a “Kafer Cup Bar” – triangulating between the show towers and frame-horns and making the rear end solid and predictable.

Mounted onto the Porsche gearbox is a recently re built 2056cc engine. Based upon a new aluminium Autolinea case, the engine received a slightly longer stroke and 94mm barrels and pistons to give a few more cc’s. Big Valve 050 heads from CB performance, alongside an Engle 120 cam, make this little engine more than peppy; free revving and with a wonderful noise! Atop the engine are rebuild Italian Weber downdraught carbs, CB Performance distributor, MSD Street Fire CDI electronic ignition and a doghouse shroud. A Welded fan and alternator performs charging and cooling duties.

The Exhaust is a fully merged stainless header mounted to a Dynaflow muffler. This has a beautiful throaty rasp, but isn’t too loud at idle, in fact its the best sounding air cooled 4 pot we have ever heard. A full-flow oil system is fitted to a high-flow pump, with external oil filter, thermostat and cooler to keep everything at the right temperature.

Our desirable Chesil never fails to turn heads. It easily keeps up with modern traffic, and has proved a reliable touring / Sunday drive companion. It even has a rear mounted luggage rack, and picnic basket.

The Speedster’s low mileage is backed up by its MOT history, and numerous old MOT’s since conversion accompany the car.  It is of course HPI clear, and a copy of the report also accompanies the car. As above, whilst our lovely Speedster is MOT exempt, it will of course be sold with a fresh MOT for the new owners benefit.

It will also come with the benefit of having a 90+ point pre-delivery inspection ready for its new owner

Many thanks for wading through our lengthy description, we believe it’s better to describe our cars fully. It is not in our interest to waste your time or ours, with inaccurate or incomplete descriptions. It does of course have the odd age related imperfection (which used car doesn’t), but for it really is excellent.

Our rare Chesil Speedster, really does tick all the QuickandBig.com boxes, it is great value, quick, well presented, sounds superb, and is a great head turner.

Please visit the photographs again as they form part of the description, familiarise yourselves with our terms and conditions and use the “contact us” tab at the top of the page, to arrange a viewing / test drive by appointment.
